A gruesome crime took place in the Gopalpur area of Bhagalpur on Thursday. A villager chased and shot dead rural doctor Mohammad Rizwan. This happened in Karchira village, the Gopalpur police station area. Makra alias Anil Rai, the alleged shooter, complained that Rizwan had an illicit affair. Eyewitnesses reported that Anil suddenly and without any warning fired his gun. The assault was unbelievable to the whole village. Gopalpur Doctor Mohammad Rizwan had travelled to the village to buy milk with a friend. Anil, who was lurking around, saw Rizwan and opened fire at him repeatedly. Rizwan ran along the village lanes in panic. But Anil pursued him and struck him with three bullets, one in the chest.
People in the village immediately took Rizwan to the Gopalpur Community Health Center in an auto. Seeing the severity of the situation, the doctors referred him to Mayaganj Hospital. But, due to excessive bleeding, he died before he could arrive at advanced care.

Naugachia SP Prerna Kumari, SDPO Om Prakash, and DSP Abhishek Kumar rushed to the spot as soon as they received the news. Police from neighbouring stations Gopalpur, Rangra, Khariq, and others joined the operation. They isolated the scene and attempted to defuse angry residents. A hunt was launched to find and apprehend the suspect. SP Prerna Kumari talked to eyewitnesses and gave strict instructions to the Gopalpur police. She affirmed that the motive is seen to be a personal problem of an illicit relationship.
The administration was prompt in developing a special squad to apprehend Anil Rai. They also summoned the FSL team to pick up evidence at the crime scene. Detectives are examining CCTV and mobile phone towers northwest to find leads. The SP stated that we will soon arrest the culprit and deliver justice. She also recovered the weapon used in the murder.
Residents said there was a recent panchayat that advised Rizwan to keep off the home of Anil. After that, Rizwan had ceased to treat patients in that home. But beneath the surface, the tensions were still there. The episode has revived bitter divisions in the village. Tempers flare and more violence may ensue as many fear.
